On Days When I'm Not Tall Enough

I’m 5 foot 9 inches tall. On some days when I need to, I can appear to be 5 foot 11. Most certainly in my cowboy boots. With or without my boots, just my attitude can put a little spring in my step. I feel extra elevation! But then sometimes, nothing works. I feel so inadequately short! Even standing up straight with the best posture, my tallest is not tall enough!

At times all of us, no matter how short or tall we actually are, have those kinds of days. We just feel not tall enough. Maybe it’s because the task looming in front of us is so massive. It could be that we didn’t eat our motivational Wheaties or a number of things that might sabotage who and what we once hoped and thought we were.

I’ve learned a few ways to deal with those “not tall enough” days.

1. I've learned to remember who I am
Chosen. Loved. Worthy. Created for a Purpose. A child of the Most High! Although the enemy desires nothing more than to convince us otherwise, there’s no denying that this is what God’s Word says about you and me. Amid our inadequacies — our “not enough-ness” — God sees us and says, “Yes! That’s MY kid! I’m crazy about them!” When I’m reminded of who God says I am, I find that instantly I stand a little taller.

2. I’ve learned to remember whose I am
There’s a desire within every person to know that they belong. In the body of Christ, everybody has their place; everyone belongs. When the weight of life presses me down and causes me to feel short, I remember the One who takes me from glory to glory, the lifter of my head and the carrier of my burdens. The Son of God stooped to where I was so I could rise to where He is! The Father of the Universe, now calls me His own. That truth alone gives me stamina to keep my head held high.

3. I’ve learned to lean on those around me
There’s a beautiful picture portrayed in Exodus 17 where Aaron and Hur hold up Moses’ arms during the battle between the Israelites and the Amalekites. As a result, the Israelites achieve an incredible victory! The truth is, we can’t go through life alone. There will be times when we will grow weary, and the pressures of our situations will cause us to realize that we cannot conquer our battles without the support of our trusted friends and mentors. To quote Bill Withers, “We all need somebody to lean on,” and that’s the truth! I encourage you to find the Aaron’s and Hur’s in your life that will be there to hold your arms up when you feel like you’re not tall enough.

The next time you find yourself “not tall enough,” put on your platforms! Now you’re tall enough! Stand on the platforms of who you are, whose you are, and be lifted by those around you.
